Frequently Asked Questions
My child is not zoned for Viera High School. Can they apply to the Academy?
-
Yes, students not zoned for Viera High can apply to the academy through the family dashboard page on the BPS website. Applications, usually start in January and end in February.
What if my child wants to take AP in Math or Science?
-
Academy students can take any math or science class. Students are only required to take their Academy Digital Media elective course, Academy English Honors, and Academy Social Studies Honors.
My child would like to take an AP in Social Studies but they are not zoned for Viera High School. Can they do that with Academy?
-
Students not zoned to Viera High School who come in through the BPS lottery for the program must take all 3 academy classes each year including: CTE Business, Social Studies Honors, and English Honors. Students not zoned can take AP social studies or AP English as an elective. Students who would like to take dual enrollment can. Their dual enrolled courses can include; math science and/or an elective.
My child would like to early admit as a senior? What does this mean and can they do that and still stay in the Academy.
-
No, students cannot early admit and stay in the academy. Early admit students strictly go to EFSC their senior year, therefore, they will not have the ability to take their academy classes at VHS. Students can still dual enroll and stay in the academy. Dual Enroll means they take classes at Viera High and partial classes at EFSC.
My child is having problems in one of their academy classes. What should I do?
-
Parents should always contact their child's teacher if they have concerns, academy or not. You can include the academy guidance counselor in your emails if there is a concern that will need to involve them (i.e accommodations/IEP).
I see one of the requirements for cords are to complete 100 hours of community service. Do those also apply to the Bright Futures Scholarship?
-
Yes, the hours your child completes will also count towards Bright Futures. Incoming 9th graders can start earning hours in non-profit organizations the day after the last day of 8th grade. Please go to Viera High School's webpage under guidance to obtain the volunteer log sheet and the volunteer action plan.
My child is not zoned for Viera High School. Do they need to complete an renewal application every year?
-
Yes, students not zoned to Viera High School who have been offered a seat to the academy must renew their seat in January of their freshman, sophomore, and junior year. The renewals count for the upcoming school year. Renewals must be done through the BPS Family Dashboard.
My incoming 9th grader just got accepted into the Academy. What do I do now?
Congratulations! We are excited to have your child next year. Parents should register their child to Viera High School before the end of July. Registration to Viera High must be done every year. If your child met with a VHS guidance counselor at their middle school, then they have already selected their elective courses. If they did not select the business course, that is fine. Our academy guidance counselor will correct their schedule to reflect the academy courses. Students who did not meet with a VHS guidance counselor because they are not zoned for us or were absent the day the counselors went to their middle school, should fill out an elective request form and email it to guidance. The course selection form can be found on the Viera High guidance page.
